PHILOSOPHY RESEARCH INDEX

The Philosophy Research Index is an indexing database of bibliographic information on articles, books, reviews, dissertations, and other documents in philosophy. Its mission is to use the best available technology to provide searchable bibliographic coverage of a definable portion of the known philosophical literature in several western languages. Coverage ranges from the year 1460 to the present, with citations of material in English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Latin, and other languages.

The database is updated monthly. Since launch total content has increased by approximately 10,000 citations per month.

Coverage of many journals is complete, from volume 1 to the present. The project aims to complete back issue coverage of each journal in the database, since this is often the least accessible form of philosophical scholarship. Electronic feeds from major journal publishers have been set up to maintain timely and complete coverage of current issues. We will make use of publisher's catalogues, bibliographies, and other sources to add new data.

The Philosophy Research Index supports a variety of searching and browsing options, with faceted search results and an integrated time line. Users can save or export citations for later use, and social networking functionality is provided to facilitate information sharing. A translation function is also available to help users combine all results into a single language (English). An extended librarians' view is available for each citation, and the database is OpenURL ready.

Topics covered include: aesthetics, epistemology, ethics, history of philosophy, logic, metaphysics, philosophy of language, philosophy of religion, philosophy of science, political philosophy, and social philosophy. We will expand this coverage and add subject headings to make ever more data ever more accessible.
