Established in 1964 by Juri Lotman (initially as Труды по знаковым системам - Σημειωτικη), this peer-reviewed journal is the oldest international semiotic periodical. It publishes articles and reviews in English from scholars in many countries, and also accepts papers in Russian. Russian and Estonian language abstracts are included for all artiticles. Sign Systems Studies has become a central institution in the semiotics of culture - published contributors iinclude Marcel Danesi, John Deely, Umberto Eco, Vyacheslav Ivanov, Julia Kristeva, Susan Petrilli, Augusto Ponzio, and Harri Veivo. The journal publishes one volume per year in quarterly issues.
